¿Es cierto que no puedo salir con celular/cartera/cámara a la calle?

¿Es recomendable tomar un taxi oficial desde el aeropuerto? ¿y en la calle? ¿Usan Uber?

¿Si me roban, qué hago? ¿Dónde hago la denuncia? ¿Sirve de algo hacer denuncia?

¿Se puede salir a la noche?

Estas preguntas son sólo algunos ejemplos que se repiten mail a mail y que de tanto contestarlas, decidí escribir un post al respecto que les sea útil a todos los que estén por visitar Buenos Aires.

La temática "seguridad" es sensible y hay muchas campanas al respecto. Intentaré abordar todas las aristas desde mi humilde lugar de ciudadana residente. Además he tenido la suerte de visitar otras ciudades del mundo para poder comparar desde un punto de vista objetivo.

Primero lo primero: Arrebatos y hurtos hay en TODO el mundo

Incluso en las ciudades más seguras. Tanto en Roma o en París cuando me tocó visitar el Coliseo y la Torre Eiffel, los altoparlantes anunciaban constantemente el cuidado de las pertenencias. Sin ir más lejos, en el año 2015 la Torre Eiffel fue cerrada por el paro que hicieron las personas que trabajan ahí, por la invasión de carteristas, en reclamo de seguridad. Podría citar más ejemplos de ciudades que uno se hace la idea de que son 100% seguras y no lo son. Me parecía importante dar una visión general antes de seguir con el tema.

Como todos saben, la ciudad de Buenos Aires es la capital de Argentina y como cualquier ciudad importante, la concentración de gente, transporte y atracciones turísticas es inmensa. Esto la transforma en un blanco atractivo para cometer algún delito.

Vayamos de lleno con las preguntas.

¿Es cierto que no puedo salir con celular/cartera/cámara a la calle?

No, esto es un mito. Sólo basta con mirar a los porteños (locales) para darse cuenta que todos salimos con nuestros celulares y carteras a la calle. Quizás mi recomendación es estar atentos al momento donde las puertas de la trasporte público se abre/cierran porque es donde suelen suceder los arrebatos. Otra recomendación es si están en auto ir con la ventanilla cerrada.

Evita colgar las carteras en las sillas de los restaurantes. Yo siempre la dejo detrás de mi espalda encima de la silla, para tenerla bien protegida. O directamente encima de mi falda.

En cuanto a las cámaras de fotos, la verdad es que yo siempre salgo con mi cámara y trato de mantenerme en zonas transitadas que generalmente coinciden con las zonas turísticas. Ante la menor duda la guardo y si percibo que alguna determinada situación no me gusta, me meto a un local comercial hasta que la persona que me genera incomodidad, se vaya.

¿Si me roban, que hago? ¿Dónde hago la denuncia? ¿Sirve de algo hacer denuncia?

Si tuviste la mala fortuna de sufrir un arrebato/robo, el procedimiento que te aconsejo es el siguiente:

• Entregales lo que te piden. No te resistas. Muchas veces las personas que cometen delitos estaban bajos los efectos del alcohol o de sustancias tóxicas, otras veces están armados, y no hay dinero o celular que valga lo que vale tu vida.

• Hacé la denuncia SIEMPRE. Ubicá al oficial más cercano y comentale lo ocurrido, él te va a saber decir cómo proseguir.

• Si no ves policías cerca, llamá al 4309-9700 extensión 6422 (o llamando al 103 desde un teléfono local) que es la policía especializada en turismo, conectada con todas las embajadas. Cuando el robo implica pasaportes, este dato es sumamente importante.

• Llamá al 911 ante cualquier emergencia.

¿Es recomendable tomar un taxi desde el aeropuerto? ¿y en la calle? ¿Usan Uber?

Cuando aterrizas en Buenos Aires (Ezeiza o Aeroparque), lo mejor es tomar un taxi oficial antes de salir del aeropuerto. Las tarifas están preestablecidas según la distancia/barrio y podés pagar en efectivo o con tarjeta.

Para el día a día, te recomiendo que te descargues la App "EasyTaxi". Automáticamente ubica tu localización y te pide que indiques tu destino. Te tira un estimativo de presupuesto de viaje y ofrece la opción de compartir el trayecto o no, según prefieras. Al dar "aceptar" te avisa que conductor más cercano tomó tu viaje y podes ver en vivo en el mapita como se va acercado, con todos los datos del conductor detallado en la app. Al final de trayecto, te pedirán que puntúes al conductor de 1 a 5 estrellas.

Una nueva app que ha salido en el 2017 es BA TAXI promovida por el Gobierno de turno. Es otra forma segura de tomar taxi. Pero si no tenés la app descargada o te quedaste sin batería en el celular, no hay problema con tomar un taxi de la calle, sólo fijate que en el techo del auto tengan el cartel luminoso con la marca de la agencia a la cual pertenecen (para poder reclamar después por cualquier inconveniente).

Uber funciona actualmente en la ciudad y todos los usuarios están muy conformes, no así los taxistas porteños que están completamente en contra del servicio y pretenden su prohibición.

¿Se puede salir a la noche?

Claro que sí. La city porteña es una de las más animadas de Latinoamérica y me atrevo a decir del mundo. La gente suele salir a comer tarde con amigos. Algo que tenemos los porteños es que siempre buscamos alguna excusa para juntarnos. Existen varios polos grastronómicos, bares y lugares para ir a bailar.

Algunos consejos generales a tener en cuenta (que yo misma aplico cuando viajo):

• Pasaporte, dinero en cantidad y tarjetas de crédito, quedan en la caja fuerte de hotel. Con 500 pesos argentinos y una sola tarjeta de crédito, basta para los gastos del día.

• Gestioná tus excursiones con empresas conocidas o recomendadas en el hotel.

• No aceptes promociones en la calle ni cambies dinero en otro lugar que no sea un banco o casas de cambio oficiales.

• Procurá caminar por calles iluminadas y transitadas. Si sentís que alguien te sigue, metete en un local comercial. Tu 6to sentido nunca falla.

• Celular siempre en bolsillos cerrados y donde puedas palparlo rápidamente.

• Bolsos/carteras mejor cruzados para adelante (para poder verlos)

• Estate alerta a los desconocidos que te hablan mucho. A veces son tácticas de distracción de gente que trabaja en grupo.

Security in Buenos Aires

This post is aimed to reflect myths and truths about security in the city of Buenos Aires. Being in South America, in a developing country, is not what many people believe.

Daily I receive hundreds of questions such as 'Is it true that I can not walk with my purse or mobile in the street?' or 'Can I go out at nights?' in my inbox so I decided to create this post on this subject which I think it would be useful for any tourist.

The issue of security is more than sensitive and there is a heated debate nowadays. I will try to analyse the situation from my humble perspective of citizen. Besides I have been able to visit other cities around the globe to compare from an unbiased point of view.

First of all: there are pickpockets in every corner of the world.

Yes, believe it: you will find them even in first-world cities. Both in Rome (Colosseum) and Paris (Eiffel Tower) it was constantly announced through loudspeakers to be aware of personal belongings. Moreover during 2015 the Eiffel Tower was shut due to a strike made by workers claiming for security. I could recall many examples of cities which we think they are 100% secure and, in fact, it is the other way around.

I think this background will be useful to later on provide an overview regarding this subject. As you all know Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina and, like any important city, the amount of people, transportation and tourist attractions is colossal. Then it does not surprise that this may easily trigger this type of non-sanctum activities.

Let's begin answering the questions.

Is it true that I can not go out with my mobile, purse or camera to the street?

No. That is a myth! By glancing at citizens you will realise we are all using mobiles and purse. I would suggest paying attention, should you use public transportation, at the moment where doors are open as it is the right moment for pickpocketing. Another recommendation is, should you be travelling by car, to keep windows closed. Avoid hanging purses in restaurant's chairs. The best option is to place it on your lap.

As for cameras I must admit that mine is a sort of third hand: it is always next to me. I usually move in busiest zones, generally full of tourists. should I experience an awkward situation, I immediatly put the camera away and enter into a store until the suspicious person is gone.

What to do in case of larceny? Where to I make the report? Is it useful to make it?

If you had the misfortune of being mugged, I would suggest following these steps:

• Give them what they want. Do not resist. Most of the times these muggers are under the effects of alcohol or drugs. They may carry a gun or knife. Don't forget that your life is priceless!

• ALWAYS make the report. Find the closest policeman/woman and tell him/her everything. He/she will provide your further information about what to do.

• No police officer around? Call (549) 4309-9700 extension 6422 (or by calling 103 from a local phone), which is the tourist police, connected to all embassies. This is extremely important chiefly if your passport has been taken.

• In case of emergency dial 911

Is it ok to hail a taxi inside the airport? Is it better in the street? What about Uber? When you land in Buenos Aires (Ezeiza or Aeroparque), the best option is hailing an official taxi before leaving the airport. Tariffs are set according to neighbourhood and you can pay in cash or with credit card.

Days after your arrival I would suggest downloading the app "EasyTaxi". Immediately it uses your location and asks you to indicate your destination. It provides a price estimation and you are able to share or not the journey. Once you tap "aceptar" [Accept], you are informed about the identity of the driver and how close he is. Once your journey is over, you are asked to rate the driver.

In 2017 it has been launched the app BA TAXI, promoted by current government. But if you have just ran out of battery or you do not have the app downloaded, there is no problem in hailing a taxi in the street. Pay attention to the roof of the car where they have a luminous signature with the brand of the agency they belong. Uber currently operates in the city and all users are very satisfied.

Can I go out at night? For sure! Buenos Aires is one of the most vivid cities in Latin America (and I daresay of the world). People usually go out late at night to have dinner with friends. We always look for some excuse to gather, specially in summer. There are several gastronomic poles, bars and discos.

Some tips to bear in mind (which I apply when travelling)

• Passport, cash in quantity and credit cards are left in the hotel safe. With ARS500 and a single credit card, it is enough for the expenses of the day.

• Manage your tours with companies known or recommended at the hotel.

• Do not accept tourism offers on the street. ONLY exchange money in banks or official exchange offices.

• Try to walk through illuminated and busy streets. If you feel someone is following you, get into a shop. Your sixth sense never fails.

• Mobiles always in closed pockets and easy to find.

• Pay attention to strangers who speak to you a lot. Sometimes they apply distracting tactics to fraud.
